Current conceptualizations of the “science of reading” refer to a body of research that informs practice based on structured literacy instruction which promotes systematic and explicit phonics and decoding teaching. This presentation will focus on how the current science of reading conceptualization should be expanded based on a body of research to address the needs of multilingual learners. In addition to phonics and decoding instruction, we will share research-based instructional components and instructional practices that support elementary multilingual students’ learning. Participants will take away evidence-based instructional practices to support their multilingual learners.
